The 4th edition of Pakistan Super League moved towards its Pakistan leg. Ever wondered why they call it the ‘leg’? The UAE version was bigger so it should’ve been called a thigh.
Lahore Qalanders, like all other teams this season, opted to bring all the 11 players in the field first and then chase. One difference: it wasn’t UAE. The decision backfired, even with a wicket of the first ball – that too of Luke Ronchi. Records were shattered and another overseas player got his name in the PSL centurions among Kamran Akmal, Colin Ingram and Sharjeel Khan.
So let’s get ahead with the ratings on GPA scale.
GPA = 3.1
The schedule of the last 8 matches changed and Lahore was deprived of hosting them due to some issues. But Lahore Qalanders didn’t disappoint with the opportunity on the other side of the country.
After getting the important wicket of Luke Ronchi, they presented Islamabad batsmen some gifts by dropping Cameron Delport who later scored a century. That wasn’t all. Islamabad batsmen were also fed some delicious desserts – half-volleys, leg stumps lines, etc.
T20 World Cup 2016 similarities
GPA = 1.5
T20 World Cup 2016 is remembered for remembering the name, New Zealand defending a low total first up against India, no-balls by India in the semi-final and – last but not least – England chasing down 230 vs South Africa. After getting a quickfire start from Jason Roy, it was Joe Root who lead his team to victory.
Lahore Qalanders had a similar situation ahead to chase 239 but the quickfire start was needed. Fakhar Zaman provided a little bit but couldn’t continue and Devcich too was dismissed in the attempt. Sohail Akhtar played a Joe Root-like innings but needed more from openers. Fakhar Zaman, as always, looked fidgety but tried the scoop shot 4 times in the match, succeeding only once.
Islamabad United batting duo
GPA = 3.8
Cameron Delport continued to build the innings even after losing his partners. He was lucky in the beginning but later was hammering the white cherry all around the corner. He became the 2nd overseas player to hit a century in PSL and the fastest to get there.
After the platform was set, Asif Ali equalled the fastest fifty record by Kamran Akmal with some belligerent sixes. His last innings is the reason he’s considered a finisher.
GPA = 3.6
Then it all came down to the man who was joint highest wicket-taker in the last season. On a night where bowlers struggled to get their length right and tight, he booked 6 wickets for next to nothing. Yes, he was helped by the fact that Lahore needed slogs but he frustrated the Lahore batters in his first over with his line and length.
What changes should be done for the next matches?
• Ropes should be pulled back or removed entirely and the match should be played on classic fence boundary system.
• Cracks should be made on the pitch artificially.
• Change six into four runs and four into a three because no one is going to run three.
• Classic thin bats should be used for further matches.
• Under-arm deliveries should be allowed.
